Trek to Re-energize America

Hi everyone!
Michaela Skiles, from Middlebury,  is organizing the Northeast leg of the Trek to Re-Energize America, the mass bike trip converging in D.C. this July to rally congress for climate change legislation. She is asking people at  other schools if they could send her the names and contact information of anyone active in bike activism on their campuses, people who just like to bike, or people interested in climate change policy.  She is looking for both riders and volunteers to help recruit more riders.   You can  email her at, mskiles@middlebury.edu.  Also, you can check out www.trektoreenergize.org for more info.

Meeting Goals

Hey everybody! – I thought it would be useful to post what we hope to accomplish for our next meeting on the 13th. Here’s what I wrote down as our primary goals:

  • Come up with definitive list of people to come to Middlebury on May 2nd
  • Decide if will want to stay overnight at Middlebury Friday or Saturday (so we can start organizing the giant slumber party)
  • Continue trying to contact and involve other schools
  • Continue posting summaries of environmental meetings on blog
  • Brainstorm collaborative Earth Day ideas
  • Continue streamlining blog

I think this covers most of it, but if I missed anything let me know!  Talk to you on Monday!

Some Blog Updates

Just wanted to let you guys know that I added some category tags so that as we are posting we can identify what school we are from.

.. and we’ll also be able to just click on the category tags on the left and instantly see all the posts from each school.

Also, I updated the links portion of the page so now we can all access the VSEC listserv/active members list. (it also might be useful to just update out statuses on that list to indicate whether or not we are coming to the meeting on the 2nd)

And one more thing. I’m looking into embedding calendars into the page and coming up short. I’ll keep you all posted, but let me know if anyone knows anything about this.

Bennington Environmental Initiatives Committee Minutes 4/4/09
April 7, 2009, 2:15 am

Hey Vermonters!

These are the results of Bennington’s Environmental Initiatives Committee (EIC) meeting from last Wednesday, in case anyone is interested in what we have going on here.  This is from an email that was sent out to all of the students on our mailing list that cannot attend the weekly meetings.
The EIC is moving forward with our plans for Earth Day on the 22nd and the days before and after it.  Here are the events that we have planned that are more or less concrete.
April 22nd- Do it in the Dark! — On Earth Day we have a number of events on the calender all relating either directly or indirectly to being conscience  about energy use and on the 22nd we plan to publicize a day when everyone will should try their hardest to use the least energy possible throughout the day (obviously within the parameters of safety.)  It will culminate in an “Earth Hour” when everyone will turn off lights and there will be a candlelit acoustic concert or several on commons from 9 to 10 in the evening.  We hope to get the word out as much as possible and get the maximum number of people engaged and participating.  We had planned originally to have meters on houses in order to do house competitions and get a better readout of how much energy would have been saved for individual buildings, but unfortunately we wont have those in time, however it is definitely something that we will be doing in the future.
April 22nd- Local Food Day — Although this is not completely solidified, Dana has been talking with Bill Scully, who suggested doing a local food day on Earth Day.  We are not sure whether it will be all three meals or just dinner perhaps, but that is definitely something to look forward to.
April 22nd- Faculty Panel — We have asked several professors from Bennington to talk about Environmental issues that they care about pertaining to their various disciplines.
April 25th- Clothing Swap — If you have old things that you don’t need, come and swap them with other people and get new things yourself so as not to have to buy new ones.  Kind of like a campus wide free box on the Saturday following Earth Day.
Also in the works with still tentative dates
Seed Starting Workshop
Bike ride/workshop with Bikes Hooray!
Roadside Cleanup
Film Screenings
Panel with Local Farmers
Eco/Geo Hike with Tim and Valerie

Hi Everyone, I missed the phone call on monday night, but I hope it went well! I am excited to have this blog  for dialogue. I am wondering about Focus the Nation this year and the town hall forums that are happening to talk to local representatives about energy solutions. The forums are happening on or around April 18th, an I am wondering if anyone is organizing one in Vermont and if so, how I can get involved! thanks!
